The new headquarters of the European Patent Office (EPO) in The Hague has been one of the largest Dutch building projects of the past few years. Not only the size of the project was exceptional. The building has been delivered with a unique concept: the design has a dubbel facade which has an internal space (between the facades) of 8 meters.
Recently, the EPO building was awarded the international prize for "Best Tall Office Building"!

The EPO is the largest international organisation in the Netherlands, with 3.000 employees. The new headquarters of 80.000 square meters houses approximately 1.750 employees. Underneath the building is a parking garage with two levels.
The building has been constructed with a steel structure and a lot of glass, according to the design of the well-known architects Ateliers Jean Nouvel (Paris) and Dam & Partners Architecten (Amsterdam). A special feature of the design is the large surrounding the building. The pond seems to lift the structure from its surroundings. Empoyees and visitors seem to walk through the water to reach the new entrance to the building, because the entrance is situated lower than the water level.

Walterboscomplex

The Walterbos complex consists of five already existing buildings that have been renovated. Between these buildings a plinth building has been constructed on which two towers of 60 m high have been placed. Two underground parking garages complete the project. 
Both the renovations and the new constructions have taken place while the other buildings where still in use. When, because of phasing or construction mechanics, hindrance could not be prevented, trouble was restricted by adapting specific working hours. The structure of the plinth building consists of poured concrete and (earth-retaining) walls. The rest of the supporting structure consists of innovative exposed concrete. The towers have been constructed of weight saving floors on columns around a core of poured exposed concrete. The parking garages have been executed as wide slab floors on columns. The entire project has been founded on steel. The constructions of this projects required high-quality visual finish, as much of the concrete is a design element and very clearly visible. Because of the good preparation that such a finish entails, technical execution ran very smoothly. Both the client (Rijksgebouwendienst) as well as the user (Belastingdienst), were closely involved in both preparation as well as the execution of this project.

City Hall Utrecht

The City Hall (Stadskantoor) Utrecht is situated directly adjacent to and above Utrecht Central Station and its bus terminal. The building houses the offices for the local authorities and there are also a number of voids and open spaces.
The project has an expressive design. The height of the building is 90 m. Because of the large spans and many voids that characterise the building, the building has been constructed with a steel structure to keep it as light as possible. The Stadskantoor is further divided in a North and a South tower, of which the latter is situated above the bus terminal.
The facade has diagonals and lattice work, that play a considerable part in the transfer of forces. Together with the cores in the North tower, they provide the stability for the entire building. Because of its location above the bus terminal, the South tower can be supported in 5 places only. 5 supercolumns have been placed, with a height of approximately 31 m.
 
NEW, UTRECHT, OFFICES

Maastower

The construction of the 165 m tall Maastoren in Rotterdam (highest building to date) began in 2007 in what is called "Kop van Zuid", in the Maas river. The Maastower has two underground parking layers. The main entrance, the entrances to the parking garages, the logistics, a grand cafe, meeting rooms and a restaurant are all located on the ground and first floor. A ramp, which runs through the restaurant area and the entrance hall, allows access to the 10 parking layers for public parking above ground level. From the 12th floor, the office area starts, where the 12th floor acts as an archive and fitness area.
